Insecta

Multimedia Embroidery- Spring 2015

Often associated with terms less than endearing, the beauty of insects is lost in their grotesque appeal. Specifically mosquitoes, cicadas and grasshoppers are known for their pesky behavior, disreputable appearance, and aggravating noise. This project is an attempt to shed a new perspective on what is perceived as ugly to something graceful. The anatomical structures and textures of each insect are mimicked through the use of traditional embroidery techniques - such as needle lace, gold work, and couching – with nontraditional materials.
